Amendment 30: Election Day Voter Registration
Election day voter registration seems to be a hotter issue than I would have expected. Proponents of the amendment believe it's important to allow as many people to vote as possible. Opponents believe there needs to be sufficient precautions to guard against voter fraud. Both issues are valid, and I guess that's what makes it such a debate.
One thing that has confused me is the suggestion that people who move to a different district within a certain time of votes are not able to vote. According to the issues booklet, anyone who moves districts "may re-register at any time at their county clerk's office or on election day at their precinct polling place". The remaining people who have not registered within the time limit, but may want to vote on election day, are questionable in my mind. Who are the people who don't even bother to register, but then suddenly feel it's important to vote on election day? Even if people do not always vote, it would seem to me that anyone with any political thoughts at all would happily register well in advance of any election.
On the other hand, I don't think those arguments invalidate the basic idea that the more people that vote, the better. The amendment appears to have considered the possibilities of voter fraud, and I believe that even if it only helps because people have the perception that it's easier to vote, that is a positive outcome. Although I would be interested to hear more specifics in the debate, such as studies from other states that have election day registration, at this time, I support this amendment.
