Referendum B: Public/Private Ownership of Local Health Care Services
This is another tough one. My initial instinct is that I don't like the idea of private companies using (and risking) our public money for their benefit. Since I don't see a problem with healthcare services available in my area, I don't see a need to subsidize those companies.
However, a little research shows that this referendum will mostly benefit rural communities:
"The partnerships could make possible new urgent-care centers, assisted-living facilities, mobile diagnostic services or other programs the hospital couldn't provide on its own. Local governments would be prohibited from going into debt or pledging their credit to create and operate a health-care partnership."
It's hard to know how much it will really help, and whether the potential abuses by urban corporations will outweigh the benefits offered to rural communities. My decision-making thought is that it is more important to ensure those rural communities have adequate health care than it is to protect against abuses which can be punished later.
